March's M'kor Cooking for Leavenhouse was quite an adventure! Before the cooking team arrived, I set up the kitchen, heating up pots of water and pans, and setting out cutting boards and knives. While the ingredients for dessert and the side dish were there, the ingredients for the main course had not yet been delivered! We gathered promptly at 7:00 in the M'kor kitchen. We had a small, but spirited team who got right to work. Our thanks this month to the following volunteers:
We were ready, but where were the main course ingredients? (Was that a panicked look in Carol Hupping's eyes?) Quickly, we reviewed Carol's folder of recipes for one with the fewest ingredients. Instead of the scheduled Turkey Chili, we settled on Tuna Noodle Casserole, a dish with less than a dozen components. We divided and conquered. One carload of volunteers scrambled for a quick trip to BJ's while the remainder of the team got to work baking brownies, and washing, slicing, dicing and mixing up a wonderful Waldorf salad. Once at BJ's, the team ripped the shopping list into four scraps and split up in a running adventure reminiscent of the old show, Super Market Sweep. By the time we returned, the core team had finished the Waldorf salad and the brownies. In the next hour, we finished preparing enough Tuna Noodle Casserole to serve more than 125 people! We packaged up the food and stored it in the walk-in refrigerator, ready for the transportation volunteers. The team then scrubbed all the pots, pans, cutting boards, and utensils. Trash and recyclable materials were separated. The tables, sinks, and stove were all cleaned up. We looked at the time to discover that we finished at 8:40 PM, a full twenty minutes earlier than originally scheduled! Not bad for a group of amateurs. We hope you will join us next month. We could have used four to six more people and next month's recipe will be a little more complex. Send me an email if you would like to join the fun Thursday, April 25th, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
